Comparative study on haematological traits of endangered Andaman wild pig and other indigenous pig breeds available at Andaman and Nicobar Islands, India

Abstract: Aim: The present experiment was conducted to investigate and compare the haematological parameters of different pig breeds available at Andaman and Nicobar Islands, India viz. Andaman wild pig, Nicobari pig, Andaman desi pig and Large White Yorkshire (LWY). Six erythrocyte traits, seven leukocyte traits and four platelet traits were assessed.Materials and Methods: 10 ml blood was collected from each adult pig via external jugular vein aseptically in a collection tube containing anticoagulant EDTA (2 mg EDTA/ml… Show more

“…The RBC of hybrid, NIP and BC were not significant varied from each other from the study. This finding was contrary to findings of De et al (2013) [23] where the PCV values of local pigs of India were significantly different from that of the exotic pigs. In this study, values for RBC, PCV and Hb were observed to be within normal range.…”

“…The significant effect of breed on platelet trait was in line with findings of De et al (2013) [23] where the variation between the local breed from India and exotic pigs were significant. Platelet trait in this study for NIP and Hybrid were within the normal range (but that of Hybrid was higher than that of NIP) while the backcross value was lower than the normal range for the domestic pigs.…”

“…Pigs constitute a major share (27.26%) of the total livestock of Andaman and Nicobar islands and play a vital role in the livelihood of the native people of these Islands (De et al 2014). Two genetic groups of domestic pigs namely Nicobari pig and Andaman Desi pig are available in these Islands (De et al 2013). The population of the pig breeds has reduced drastically over the last decade and immediate conservation effort is the need of the hour.…”

“…The measured values in the Yorkshire and Mangalitza breeds gradually increased from spring to autumn. De et al (2013) examined selected hematological parameters in four pig breeds in India andaman wildpig, pig Nicobar andamandesi pig, Large White Yorkshire (LWY). A significantly (p<0.05) higher concentration of WBC, RBC and hemoglobin was measured in Andaman wild pigs compared to other breeds.…”
