Comparative study on Toxoplasma infection between Malaysian and Myanmar pregnant women

Abstract: BackgroundToxoplasma gondii, an obligate intracellular protozoan parasite, causes a disease called toxoplasmosis which can sometimes be acquired congenitally by a newborn from an infected mother. This study aimed to determine the seroprevalence of Toxoplasma infection and its associated risks among 219 and 215 pregnant women from Malaysia and Myanmar, respectively.MethodsAnti-Toxoplasma IgG and IgM antibodies were screened by using standard commercial ELISA kits. The socio-demographic, obstetrics and risk fact… Show more

“…In pregnant women, multiparity, older age, and a history of poor obstetric outcome have been previously described as risk factors resulting from exposure to Toxoplasma 14 , 17 20 . In our study, only multiparity was significantly associated with Toxoplasma seropositivity.…”

“…Research has been documented in Malaysia and other neighboring countries that evaluated the seroprevalence of T. gondii among different individual groups. The majority of the studies have focused on the seroprevalence in pregnant women [ 35 , 36 ], followed by patients with disorders [ 37 , 38 ], healthy community members [ 39 , 40 ], migrant workers [ 41 , 42 ], and schizophrenic patients [ 43 , 44 ]. In addition, these studies also focused on the socio-demographic data, epidemiological profile, possible risk factors of acquiring the T. gondii infection, and the acute/chronic stage of the infection.…”

“…In Southeast Asian countries, culinary habits (e.g., eating undercooked meat) of people and low water quality may be a more significant risk factor for T. gondii than cat ownership (Nissapatorn et al, 2003). Serological studies in human serum in Myanmar have shown that 31.8-41.0% were infected with Toxoplasma infection (Chan et al, 2008;Andiappan et al, 2014).…”
