Comparative three-dimensional finite element analysis of implant-supported fixed complete arch mandibular prostheses in two materials

Abstract: Background:The increase of requests for implant-supported prosthesis (ISP) with zirconia as infrastructure has attracted a lot of attention due to its esthetics, biocompatibility, and survival rate similar to metallic infrastructure. The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of two different framework materials on stress distribution over a bone tissue-simulating material.Materials and Methods:Two ISP were modeled and divided into two infrastructure materials: titanium (Ti) and zirconia. Then, these … Show more

“…Compared to other in vitro methodologies, FEA produces results not only for a surface (photoelastic) but also for a punctual area (strain gauge), 19,20 being the only method to show the strain distribution inside the bone tissue, as commonly used. 21,22,23,24 To examine FEA results on implants, von Mises criteria was chosen to observe the regions with higher stress concentration. 25 To the best of the author's knowledge, there are no studies available in the literature associating implantoplasty and different heights of exposed implants.…”

“…In stress evaluation studies, the use of a bone tissue simulant material with the same mechanical behavior and capable of guaranteeing the system a reproducible pattern in all the specimens makes studies more concrete in providing inferences about the influence of the variables studied. In this context, polyurethane ( 6 - 10 ) is the material of choice due to its elasticity modulus and scientific validation. Thus, correlating two numerical methodologies to study stress allows for a concise direction to interpret the results for possible elucidation of the clinical occurrence.…”

“…The prosthetic screw is one of the main regions of stress concentration and possible mechanical failure in the implant/prosthesis 25,26 . Thus, the concentration of stresses can be facilitated during incidence of oblique loads 6,21,24 .…”

“…The von-Mises stress is directly related to the ductile metals failure [25][26][27][28] . Therefore, restorative procedures that involve stress maps with greater magnitude show higher possibility of premature failure 6 .…”
