PurposeThis study examines empirically the development of efficiency levels in the hotel industry and its key drivers, by juxtaposing pre- and post-COVID-19 results in the four most important cities in the United States in terms of international arrivals.Design/methodology/approachA two-step approach was employed by first utilising the data envelopment analysis method to characterise the efficiency of United States hotels. A multiple linear regression analysis was performed to compare hotel performance in the two years prior to the COVID-19 outbreak with the first two years after the outbreak.FindingsThe results indicated the positive effect of size and the economy hotel category on efficiency, while increasing property age, urban location and a lack of brand affiliation showed a negative effect. During the pandemic, size and the economy category remained significant and positive, whereas urban location continued to represent a negative effect.Practical implicationsThis study assists decision makers regarding prospective investments, supports existing and future portfolio analyses, contributes to observations on competition, and offers a wider perspective of the industry.Originality/valueFirst, this study investigated the evolution of factors that influenced efficiency before and after the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. Second, the results offer insights into the impact of the pandemic on hotels' efficiency levels. Third, the study proposes directions for the restoration of hotel efficiency to pre-COVID-19 levels.

In architectural spaces, the ambiance created by lighting plays a significant role in influencing people’s emotions, often relying on the use of color and light. However, previous research has primarily focused on urban architectural spaces, with relatively less attention given to rural environments, especially the interior spaces of rural accommodation. The objective of this study is to investigate the impact of colored lighting within rural accommodation interiors on people’s emotions and visual perceptions. Additionally, the study aims to establish an emotional dimension model to map the experimental results onto eight basic emotions, utilizing the PAD model for quantitative analysis. To achieve this goal, the researchers recruited 90 participants and divided them into six groups, each experiencing different combinations of indoor lighting scenes with varying colors. Participants evaluated their emotions and visual perceptions. The study results indicate that the combination of cool and warm white light with colored light significantly influences the arousal level of participants but has a relatively lower impact on pleasure levels, dominance and relaxation levels. In comparing the emotions experienced after exposure to cool and warm white light followed by colored light, warm white light elicited more positive emotions. Furthermore, colored light following cool white light diminished the sense of warmth in light, while yellow–blue light enhanced visual comfort and blue–red light increased attraction. Overall, the effect of colored lighting in rural accommodation interior spaces on improving negative emotions was relatively weak. Conversely, the combination of warm white light with blue–yellow or green–yellow light had a more significant effect on enhancing visual perceptions and reducing participants’ anxiety. This research provides valuable insights and references for designing the lighting ambiance in rural accommodation interiors and lighting design, with the potential to enhance the spatial experience of rural accommodations.

Purpose: to develop an effective model of management of the hospitality industry at the level of the state management system to ensure the effectiveness of the industry and its impact on improving the socio-economic indicators of the state's development in the context of crisis phenomena. Theoretical framework: The hospitality industry is an important factor in the development of the country's economy. The hotel business occupies one of the leading positions in the share of the country's GDP, which develops the social component and tourism. The hospitality industry is highly profitable, therefore, it ensures the development of open markets through the formation of competition. The high competitiveness of the industry is determined by the high quality of service provision. In terms of the multifunctional importance of the hospitality industry in the economic system, the article examines the conceptual foundations of building a model of state management of the hospitality industry. Design/methodology/approach: An analysis of trends and trends in the development of the hospitality industry was carried out, and it was determined that after the end of the pandemic, the global hospitality industry will have a significant increase in the main financial and economic indicators, which is explained by delayed demand. Findings: Some aspects of the development of the hospitality industry in the conditions of full-scale military aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine are considered. A set of financial and economic indicators was determined, based on the accumulation of which a management model was developed. Research, Practical & Social implications: On the basis of the developed management system of the hospitality industry at the state level, an organizational model of management was developed, which represents a set of relations and relationships between the public, private sector, and the population. Originality/value: On the basis of the analysis, practical mechanisms for introducing the management model into the practical activities of the hospitality industry were developed and proposed in order to improve the results of hotel enterprises and the industry as a whole, adapted to the challenges of crises and the consequences of military aggression.
