Comparing Ultrasound Biometry with Partial Coherence Interferometry for Intraocular Lens Power Calculations: A Randomized Study

Abstract: The results of this trial demonstrated that the calculation of IOL power based on ocular axial length measurement with PCI technology provided no clinical advantage over conventional applanation ultrasound, as measured by postoperative refractive outcome (anzctr.org.au number, ACTRN12608000077369).

“…These data showed the relatively low contribution of error from the axial length source, while the achievement of 0.01 ± 0.20 D error in spectacle plane in 95% of observations has not yet been reached. The reported number of predictions that fall within ±0.5 D, ± 1.0 D, ± 2.0 D of the expected outcome were reached in 55.6-69% [14,20,21]; 87-95.7% [14,20,21,23] and 99.9-100% [20,21] of cases obtained with PCLI biometry. When two methods were compared by Bland-Altman analysis, they demonstrated acceptable agreement for clinical purposes.…”

“…This would be acceptable for clinical purposes, according to the reported number of predictions that fall within ±0.5 D, ± 1.0 D, ± 2.0 D of the expected outcome in 45.5-92% [14,15,20,21]; 77.3-93.5% [14,[20][21][22][23] and 98.4-100% [20][21][22] of cases obtained with ultrasound biometry, respectively.…”

“…Nevertheless, a precise IOL calculation is not easy, depending on several parameters, such as axial length (AL) [2][3][4][5][6], anterior chamber depth [3,5], keratometry [2][3][4][5] or the lens formula [2][3][4][5]. Accurate AL measurement has been demonstrated to be the main factor for IOL power calculation [2][3][4][5][6], highlight related with the ocular biometry.…”
