Comparison between 90‐degree and 360‐degree selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT): A 2‐year follow‐up

Abstract: Purpose To compare the effect of 90‐ and 360‐degree selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT) as primary or supplement therapy in patients with glaucoma and ocular hypertension (OHT). Methods Patients (>30 years old) with OHT, primary open‐angle glaucoma (OAG), pigmentary glaucoma or pseudoexfoliative glaucoma were enrolled in a prospective randomized clinical trial. Patients were sequentially randomized to either 90‐ or 360‐degree SLT. Their intraocular pressure (IOP) was monitored. Results The survival periods (… Show more

“…Across all of the studies summarized in Table 5 , four reported on the energy range used for treatment, which varied between 0.2 and 1.4 mJ per treatment spot. 11 , 68 , 69 , 70 The mean total energy was reported in two studies as 73.6 and 90.2 mJ. 50 , 71 Another study compared the effectiveness of SLT at 90, 180 or 360 degrees to that of topical treatment, 58 while in the other seven studies the energy was applied to 360 degrees of the TM.…”

“…In the present study, the average amount of laser spots did not differ significantly between the groups that permitted the comparison between the PACG and POAG eyes. Moreover, according to the recent literature, even the 90°SLT is as effective as 360°SLT in a longterm period [30]. e interpretation of the glaucoma progression is rather challenging as many different factors may affect a glaucoma course [31][32][33].…”

“…In China, medication currently serves as the mainstream first-line treatment for POAG and OHT 14 . Studies in China 15,16 and other countries [17][18][19] have reported greatly varied treatment efficacy for SLT which is possibly due to differences in severity of glaucoma, ethnic background 20,21 , laser energy used, treatment area and length of follow-up. In the past, SLT has been mainly used for cases with uncontrolled IOP, intolerance to medical therapy and poor compliance in mild POAG [46][47][48] .…”
