Comparison Between Treatments in a Repeated‐measurement Design: Anova and Multivariate Methods

Abstract: This paper investigates several methods available for testing comparisons between treatments in a repeated-measurement design, within the framework of the general multinormal model. Various ratios are considered, and the weakest assumptions required for the validity of each 9 ratio are presented. When several .F ratios are valid, power considerations are introduced for purposes of choice. Methods enabling the testing of validity assumptions are also presented, together with alternative multivariate statistics w… Show more

“…Two separate analyses of variance (VAR 3 program; Rouanet & Lepine, 1970) were carried out upon repeated measures of the numher of contacts, for the purpose of comparing CONT 1+2, EXP I, EXP 2, on the one hand, and CONT 3 and EXP 3, on the other. In addition, the times of contacts were analyzed separately using the same method.…”

“…Although the multivariate test is considered a better choice when the assumption of sphericity is violated (Rouanet & Lepine, 1970;Schutz & Gessaroli, 1987), the univariate model offers a valid and at times better approach (Mendoza et al, 1974;Muller & Barton, 1989) when it is not. Thus we restricted our power estimates to data meeting the conditions oflocal sphericity-that is, e = 1.0 for each of the three error variancecovariance matrices.…”
