Comparison of artificial intelligence techniques to failure prediction in contaminated insulators based on leakage current

Abstract: Contamination in insulators results in an increase in surface conductivity. With higher surface conductivity, insulators are more vulnerable to discharges that can damage them, thus reducing the reliability of the electrical system. One of the indications that the insulator is losing its insulating properties is its increase in leakage current. By varying the leakage current over time, it is possible to determine whether the insulator will develop an irreversible failure. In this way, by predicting the increas… Show more

“…The development of the fault can be linked to the increase in a measure of the insulator's condition. The leakage current is a measure that can be used to evaluate the time series measured according to the increase of contamination, thus being possible to forecast the development of a failure by the variation of this measure [2]. Regarding the time series forecasting, several approaches are being studied to obtain a better performance with lower computational cost, such as the ensemble learning models which will be presented in the next section.…”

“…However, in the presence of moisture a conductive path can be generated which decreases the insulation between the high-voltage phases and ground [40]. When cracks and fissures occur in the insulator, the rate of contamination deposition may accelerate and consequently increases its leakage current, making it more susceptible to partial discharge events and flashovers [41].…”
