Comparison of body composition analysis methods among centenary women: Seeking simpler methods

Abstract: Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the most commonly used body composition tools in clinical practice, such as anthropometry and electrical bioimpedance, and compare it with deuterium oxide. Methods: An exploratory cross-sectional study was conducted on women aged 100 years or above at home. Body composition was determined by measuring skinfolds (Jackson and Pollock and Durnin and Womersley equations), by bioimpedance, and by the deuterium oxide method. Results: Body mass index values were lower… Show more

“…The use of SF thickness may not be sufficiently sensible to detect aging related changes, as they are represented by alteration of internal components [39]. Those changes are important because there is centralization and internalization of fat over the years [16], and SF thickness is based on the principle that subcutaneous tissue fat represents the total fat, which can underestimate the adipose mass in these individuals [30].…”

“…al., (2013) are considered imprecise ( Guedes and Rechenchosky, 2008 ; Toll et al., 2010 ; Witzel et al., 2014 ) since some fat weight may not be completely disregarded and end up as part of the propofol dosage calculus. Deuterium isotope dilution methodology is a gold standard technique in human and veterinary medicine because it allows accurate determination of body water volume since water maintains a stable relationship with lean mass, and fat composition ( Schoeller et al., 1980 ; Ferrier et al., 2002 ; Duarte et al., 2019 ).…”
