Comparison of Different Mitcrowave Communication Systems

Abstract

-MICROWAVE TRANSMISSION SYSTEMS IN A.TELECOMMJUNICATIONS NETWORKSAny national telecommunications network is comple4 since it is required to meet a wide range of needs. In such a network microwave systems play an importan-t role which we shall examine by way of a comparison of characteristics, a useful starting point being the French network, since this specific case is most familiar to the authors.1.1 -GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF THE FRENCH NETWORK. At present, telephone traffic accounts for the greater part of network utilisation and will still hold the lead at least until 1985 at which time it is estimated at 80 % of total traffic. However, data transmission and video communications are-called upon to grow over the years ahead.France is very much behind in developing its telephone network but a very largescale investment programne is currently under way, whereby the traffic handling capacity is rising between 20 % and 25 % per annum.One consequence of this high-level investment could be that the French telecommunications network could find itself outfitted with very modern equipment. In particular, we may note that by 1985, 20 % of all switching units will be electronic.
