Comparison of methods for proanthocyanidin extraction from pine (Pinus densiflora) needles and biological activities of the extracts

Abstract: Flavonoids are known to be effective scavengers of free radicals. In particular, proanthocyanidins are flavonoids that possess cardiovascular protection, antioxidative activities, and immunomodulatory activities. Here, we evaluated proanthocyanidin contents in the total polyphenolic compounds of pine needle extracts prepared by hot water, ethanol, hexane, hot water-hexane (HWH), and hot water-ethanol (HWE). Analysis of each extract indicated that the ethanol extract contained the highest proanthocyanidin conce… Show more

“…Total phenols in maritime pine bark extracts was determined using spectrophotometric FolineCiocalteu method according to the literature methods (Orhan et al, 2013;Kim et al, 2010) with some modifications, using gallic acid as standard. Extract solution (0.5 mL) of diluted samples were added into test tubes followed by 2.5 mL of FolineCiocalteu reagent (20%, v/v).…”

“…47 Proanthocyanidins have a strong ferrous ion chelating power and NO production ability. 48 This may explain the prophylactic power of the drug Artavolᴿ developed by Patrick Ogwang in Uganda. There is growing evidence that arginine, proanthocyanidins present in Artemisia plants and the nitric oxide they generate, interfere with the intrahepatic malaria parasites.…”
