Comparison of PDE-Based Nonlinear Diffusion Approaches for Image Enhancement and Denoising in Optical Coherence Tomography

Abstract: A comparison between two nonlinear diffusion methods for denoising OCT images is performed. Specifically, we compare and contrast the performance of the traditional nonlinear Perona-Malik filter with a complex diffusion filter that has been recently introduced by Gilboa et al.. The complex diffusion approach based on the generalization of the nonlinear scale space to the complex domain by combining the diffusion and the free Schridinger equation is evaluated on synthetic images and also on representative OCT i… Show more

“…O filtro não-linear adaptativo de difusão complexa (adaptive nonlinear complex diffusion filter -NCDF) [28][29][30][31] apresenta característicasúteis para atenuar ruído speckle enquanto preserva características da imagem. Embora sua definição esteja muito acima do escopo deste trabalho, o métodoé delineado pela atualização iterativa de uma imagem de acordo com:…”

“…The method was designed in a way that, as iterations go by, the imaginary part of the image retrieves feature and edge information of a filtered version of the original image, as showed in [5]. The adequate coefficient of diffusion also used by Salinas et al [4] for OCT is given by…”

“…[2] SDOCT images are inevitably affected by noise. [11][12][13][14] A tradeoff always exists between fast image acquisition and high image quality, and if the image acquisition speed is increased, then SNR will suffer. [7,10] OCT scanners laterally sample a target by steering the beam across one or two dimensions in order to produce a 2D image or a 3D volume.…”
