Comparison of Pumping Regimes for Water Distribution Systems to Minimize Cost and Greenhouse Gases

Abstract: A single-objective optimization model has been developed for water distribution system (WDS) pumping operations, considering five different types of pump operating regimes. These regimes use tank trigger levels, scheduling and a combination of both to control pumps. A new toolkit development to alter rule-based controls in EPANET has allowed more complex pump operating regimes than have previously been considered to be optimized. The performance of each of the regimes is compared with respect to two different … Show more

“…Early studies on WDS operation optimization focused on deterministic approaches, such as dynamic programming (DP) (Sterling and Coulbeck 1975), linear programming (LP) (Giacomello et al 2013;Kurian et al 2018), nonlinear programming (NLP) (Brion and Mays 1991;Ormsbee and Reddy 1995), and mixed integer non-linear programming (MINLP) (Biscos et al 2003;Bagirov et al 2013). Recently, meta-heuristic algorithms, such as genetic algorithms (Paschke et al 2001;Kazantzis et al 2002;van Zyl et al 2004;Wang et al 2009;Wu et al 2010;Wu et al 2012a;Wu et al 2012b;Blinco et al 2016), simulated annealing (da Conceição Cunha and Sousa 1999; Goldman and Mays 1999), particle swarm optimization (Wegley et al 2000), and ant colony optimization (Ostfeld and Tubaltzev 2008;López-Ibáñez et al 2008)…”
