Comparison of Resource Utilization in the Treatment of Open‐Angle Glaucoma between Two Cities in Finland: Is More Better?

Abstract: . Introduction:  Glaucoma is a progressive optic neuropathy associated with neural rim loss of the optic disc and the retinal nerve fibre layer typically causing visual field (VF) deterioration. Generally, glaucomatous lesions in the eye and in the visual field progress slowly over the years. In population‐based cross‐sectional studies, the percentage of unilateral or bilateral visual impairment varied between 3–12%. In screening studies, 0.03–2.4% of patients have been found to suffer visual impairment. Glauc… Show more

“…In the Beaver Dam Eye Study, of 98 study participants who had a history of glaucoma diagnosis, were taking medicines for glaucoma or had undergone glaucoma surgery, only 32 had an abnormal visual field, or large or asymmetric C/D ratio (Klein et al 1992). In a recent study conducted in Finland on resource utilization in glaucoma care, of 168 individuals with previously diagnosed OAG, 40% did not display any glaucomatous structural or functional damage after 11 years of continuous medical treatment and follow-up (Hagman 2013). In a clinic-based study of 100 patients treated for OAG, 41 cases were considered to be falsely diagnosed, although details on study methodology were not available (article published in Romanian) (Zemba et al 2008).…”

“…The main quality of life determinant in glaucoma patient is loss of visual functions. Loss of visual functions results in driving problems, trouble in seeing objects in peripheral vision, orientation and mobility problems, night vision problems, light and dark adaptation difficulties, reading and problems in estimating distance, which are the main reasons for the increased number of all-cause falls and serious injuries ( 19 , 20 ). Although it is commonly considered that these difficulties occur in later stages of the disease, it is apparent that they also occur at the beginning of the disease ( 21 - 23 ).…”
