Comparison of the prognostic value of immunoinflammation-based biomarkers in patients with gastric cancer

Abstract: Background: Systemic immune-inflammation index (SII)-comprising platelet, neutrophil, and lymphocyte count-is an objective and reliable biomarker for predicting the prognosis in cancer patients because it comprehensively reflects the balance between host inflammatory and immune responses. In this study, we clarified the prognostic impact of immunoinflammation-based indices, i. e. SII, neutrophil/ lymphocyte ratio (NLR), and platelet/lymphocyte ratio (PLR), in gastric cancer patients. Results: In multivariate a… Show more

“…Extensive research revealed that inflammatory cells promote the proliferation and metastasis of tumor cells by creating tumor microenvironment. [6][7][8] Studies have shown that large numbers of infiltrating white blood cells that persist in nasopharyngeal cancer lesions can promote the growth of nasopharyngeal cancer cells. 9 In addition, a large-scale study from Hong Kong found that even a small tumor load can release a sufficient amount of EBV DNA into the circulation, demonstrating the potential of circulating EBV DNA analysis in the screening of early asymptomatic nasopharyngeal carcinoma.…”

“…For instance, the SII has also been shown to be associated with poorer survival in small cell lung cancer, hepatocellular carcinoma, colorectal cancer, and stomach cancer. 25,26 In a study conducted by Aksu et al, the rela-tionship between inflammatory parameters and the need for invasive intervention in patients with non-ST myocardial infarction during the COVID-19 pandemic period was investigated. At the end of the study, the authors found high SII values to be significantly higher in patients who needed invasive intervention.…”

“…SII including neutrophil, platelet, and lymphocyte counts, which shows the balance between the immune system of the host and the inflammatory state, is a prognostic marker in patients with sepsis 31 . It is also used as a poor prognosis indicator for small cell lung, hepatocellular, colorectal, and gastric cancers 32–35 . In the study of Usul et al, in which they examined 282 patients, SII was found to be higher in COVID‐19 patients compared to healthy controls, and it was suggested that it plays a diagnostic role for SARS‐CoV‐2 infection 36 .…”
