Competing with each other: Fish isotopic niche in two resource availability contexts

Abstract: IntroductionCompetition embodies species struggle for space and food and is, therefore, a critical evolutionary mechanism influencing species spatiotemporal patterns and persistence. One of the main drivers of competition is resource availability. In marine ecosystems, resource availability is determined, among other things, by habitat structural complexity, as it increases biodiversity and species abundance. In this context, our study aims at understanding how the differences in substrate complexity affect po… Show more

“…Generalist species are believed to have a narrower isotopic niche width than specialist species due to generalists having similar isotopic signatures because they are sampling the same prey items in similar proportions and thus integrate their diet [59,60]. The niche width data from this study suggest a higher variability in the diets among L. xanthurus individuals, resulting in specialized diets [61], compared to individuals belonging to other fish species that were thus, relatively, generalists.…”

“…Boreal and Lusitanian species displayed trophic niche overlap, indicating that competition for food resources exists between the two biogeographical groups (Gaspar et al., 2022; Pankow et al., 2021; Pelage et al., 2022). The surface area of the Boreal group trophic niche overlapped by the Lusitanian group increased, while the surface area of the Lusitanian group trophic niche overlapped by the Boreal group decreased.…”

“…Competition is a critical evolutionary mechanism that influences the spatio-temporal and dynamic pattern and persistence of species [243]. Tissues and organs may be considered as "social groups" governed by "societal rules" that allow for normal cells to cooperate, while mutant cells compete and expand their territory with the biomolecular aid of their neighboring non-tumor cells [244].…”
