Emission factors of formaldehyde and VOCs were determined for two waste treatment plants (WTP) located in\ud the metropolitan area of Barcelona city. Formaldehyde emission factors were determined from the biogas engines\ud exhausts and the process chimneys (after the biofilter process), and VOC emission factors were determined\ud in the process chimneys. Formaldehyde and VOC were dynamically sampled usingDNPH-coated adsorbent tubes\ud with ozone scrubber and multi-sorbent bed tubes (Carbotrap, Carbopack X and Carboxen 569), respectively,\ud using portable pump equipment. Formaldehyde emission factors from biogas engines were found between\ud 0.001–0.04 g s-1. Additionally, formaldehyde and VOC emission factors from process chimneys were found to\ud be between 0.0002–0.003 g s-1 and 0.9 ± 0.3 g s-1, respectively. Employing real emission factors, the expected\ud concentrations derived from the WTPs in their nearby urban areaswere calculated using The Atmospheric Pollution\ud Model (TAPM, CSIRO), and impact maps were generated. On the other hand, ambient air formaldehyde and VOC\ud concentrations were determined in selected locations close to the evaluated waste treatment facilities using both\ud active and passive samplers, and were between 2.5±0.4–5.9±1.0 µgm-3and91±48–242±121 µgm-3, respectively.\ud The concentrations of formaldehyde and VOC derived exclusively from the waste treatment plants were\ud around 2% and 0.3 ± 0.9% of the total formaldehyde and VOC concentrations found in ambient air, respectively.Postprint (author's final draft

Abstract:In Guangdong province, many hot springs were exploited and developed into popular places for tourist. In addition, hotels have been set up near hot spring sites to attract people, including local citizens, to spend their spare time inside these so-called "spring hotels". In our study, indoor air quality was investigated in four hot spring hotels in Guangdong province, China. Measured indoor pollutants included CO 2 , CO, PM 10 , PM 2.5 and Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs). As the result show, high concentrations of carbon dioxide might be attributed to poor ventilation; and the variations of indoor PM 10 , PM 2.5 concentrations were related to occupants' activities. Alpha-pinene and toluene were the most common VOC species in the hot spring hotels other than monocyclic aromatic hydrocarbons like Benzene, Toluene, Ethylbenzene and Xylenes (BTEX), which were at medium levels among the reported indoor pollutants. High cancer risk of benzene in the newly decorated rooms should be seriously taken into consideration in the future. Indoor to Outdoor air concentration ratios (I/O) for CO 2 and VOCs were higher than 1, indicating their strong indoor sources. Negative correlations were found between indoor CO 2 and all the other compounds, and VOCs were shown to be significantly correlated (p < 0.01) to each other, including aromatic hydrocarbons and mono-terpenes. For indoor and outdoor air compounds, correlation coefficients among all compounds did not show a significant correlation, which indicated that these pollutants had different sources. Principal components analysis by SPSS showed that indoor materials, inhabitants' activities and respiration, cleaning products and outdoor sources were the main sources of indoor detected pollutants in hot spring hotels.

This paper studied associations between volatile organic compounds (VOC), formaldehyde, nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) and carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) in schools in Malaysia and rhinitis, ocular, nasal and dermal symptoms, headache and fatigue among students. Pupils from eight randomly selected junior high schools in Johor Bahru, Malaysia (N = 462), participated (96%). VOC, formaldehyde and NO 2 were measured by diffusion sampling (one week) and VOC also by pumped air sampling during class. Associations were calculated by multi-level logistic regression adjusting for personal factors, the home environment and microbial compounds in the school dust. The prevalence of weekly rhinitis, ocular, throat and dermal symptoms were 18.8%, 11.6%, 15.6%, and 11.1%, respectively. Totally 20.6% had weekly headache and 22.1% fatigue. Indoor CO 2 were low (range 380-690 ppm).
