Complementary application of the ozonized saline solution in mild and severe patients with pneumonia COVID-19: A non-randomized pilot study

Abstract: Context: Currently, there is no effective antiviral therapy recommended for novel coronavirus pneumonia 2019 (COVID-19). Aims: To assess the safety of ozonized saline solution (O3SS) used as a complementary therapy in adult COVID-19 patients. Methods: Twenty-five adult patients hospitalized with mild to severe symptoms of COVID-19, who met the inclusion criteria and were treated from April 18 to April 26, 2020, at Virgen De La Paloma Hospital, Madrid, Spain were included in this study. Patients were assigned… Show more

“…Similarly, previous studies have found that COVID-19 patients who received ozone therapy had a reduced mortality rate than ST patients (8,32,36). According to our findings, ozone's potential antiviral activity can aid in the early reduction and clearance of COVID-19, resulting in less virus infiltration The forest plots of hematology profile changes before and after interventions in the both arms.…”

“…Araimo also discovered that the demand for ventilator support was moderately reduced in the ozone group (reduced need for CPAP, high-flow nasal cannula, or venturi masks) ( 29 ). The same result was observed in Schwartz’s study, in which supplemental oxygen usage dropped from 68 to 24% in the OZ arm ( 36 ). The amelioration of bilateral radiographic pneumonia based on Taylor’s radiologic scale could be one cause for enhancing O2 saturation and minimizing the demand for O2 supply in the OZ arm ( 35 , 36 ).…”

“…Furthermore, the therapeutic applications of ozone for the treatment of SARS-CoV-2 patients have been demonstrated in several studies [193] , [194] , [195] , [196] , [197] . The administration of the ozone for the treatment of the virus can be performed via several routes, including, major autohemotherapy (MAHT), minor autohemotherapy (MiAHT), rectal insufflation (RI), ozonated saline and ozonated oils [198] .…”

“…Ozone concentrations as high as 23 – 40 µg/mL have been successfully utilised in MAHT, MiAHT and RI treatments, regularly interspersed over days to months for a diverse range of patients [193] , [194] , [204] , [205] . Saline treatments however tend to utilise lower concentrations (1 – 5 µg/mL) [195] , [206] . This is necessary to prevent the excessive formation of H 2 O 2 and HOCl - , which could induce irritative effects in the endothelium, and phlebitis [207] .…”

“…In einer Pilotstudie konnte die Gruppe um Adriana Schwartz 8 ebenfalls 2021 bei 25 hospitalisierten Patienten mit mittleren bis schweren Covid-19-Symptomen eine tendenzielle Symptombesserung nachweisen, ohne dass jegliche Nebenwirkungen auftragen. Somit kann von einer guten Behandlungsbasis ohne Risikobehaftung ausgegangen werden.…”
