Complete Genome Sequence of a Newly Identified Porcine Astrovirus Genotype 3 Strain US-MO123

Abstract: Astrovirus (AstV) infections are among the most common causes of gastroenteritis and are also associated with extraintestinal manifestations in humans and many animals. Herein, for the first time, the complete genome sequence of newly identified porcine astrovirus genotype 3 (PAstV3) strain US-MO123 was determined. Sequence comparison and phylogenetic analysis showed that PAstV3 has the closest relationship with mink AstV and the human AstV strains VA1, VA2, and SG, indicating the same ancestral origin and zoo… Show more

“…The PoAstV-3 we identified had 92.2% nucleotide sequence similarity to PoAstV-3 identified from a survey that evaluated feces samples from pigs ( 9 ).The significance of this finding is unclear. Investigations are needed to clarify the ecology and epidemiology of PoAstV-3 and the pathophysiology of neurotropic astroviruses.…”

“…We detected viral RNA by using a PoAstV-3 quantitative real-time PCR with previously fresh-frozen CNS tissues from animals with polioencephalomyelitis ( Technical Appendix Table 2). We did not detect viral RNA in serum, feces, lung, liver, kidney, or spleen samples of animals with histologic lesions or any sample from animals without histologic lesions ( 9 ).…”

“…Occasionally, AstVs are also associated with infections in other organ systems, such as the central nervous system (Blomström et al, 2010;Li et al, 2013;Quan et al, 2010). Since the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) epidemic, there has been a boost in the interest in studying novel zoonotic viruses including AstVs (Hu et al, 2014;Lan et al, 2011;Luo et al, 2011;Shan et al, 2011;Xiao et al, 2012Xiao et al, , 2013Zhu et al, 2009). Novel human and animal AstVs have been discovered in recent years (Atkins et al, 2009;Chu et al, 2010;Finkbeiner et al, 2008Finkbeiner et al, , 2009Hu et al, 2014;Kapoor et al, 2009;Luo et al, 2011;Martella et al, 2011a, b;Rivera et al, 2010;Smits et al, 2010;Stenglein et al, 2012).…”
