Complex permittivity and moisture measurements of oil palm fruits using an open-ended coaxial sensor

Abstract: An open-ended coaxial sensor for the determination of complex permittivity and moisture content of oil palm fruits is presented in this paper. The measurement system consisting of the sensor and a PC-controlled vector network analyzer have been tested successfully on a range of oil palm fruits of various degrees of ripeness. The initial values of the complex permittivity were estimated using the admittance model of the sensor. The amount of moisture content was found by matching the values of permittivity from… Show more

“…For characterizing liquids or semi-solids, the reflection only transmission line methods have also been used, where the open ended coaxial probe is inserted into the liquid test specimen. This method, however, requires complex calibration process, and is not well suited for solids, especially for thin specimens having low losses, as the overall procedure here assumes the test sample to be semi-infinite having virtually no air gap between the probe and the surface of the sample [6].…”

“…However, for the characterization of liquids, this approach has quite often been used as the reflection only method based on the open ended coaxial probe, which is sold by few companies and is usually an expensive device, which works by inserting the probe directly into the liquid test specimen [5]. This method, however, requires complex calibration process, and the test sample comes into direct contact with the probe making this procedure difficult for viscous liquids as there is a danger of getting the probe damaged.…”
