Complex systems approach for sports injuries: moving from risk factor identification to injury pattern recognition—narrative review and new concept

Abstract: Injury prediction is one of the most challenging issues in sports and a key component for injury prevention. Sports injuries aetiology investigations have assumed a reductionist view in which a phenomenon has been simplified into units and analysed as the sum of its basic parts and causality has been seen in a linear and unidirectional way. This reductionist approach relies on correlation and regression analyses and, despite the vast effort to predict sports injuries, it has been limited in its ability to succ… Show more

“…Therefore, any injury is critical in an athlete’s injury profile when assessing their risk for subsequent injury. Previous injury history has also been suggested to modify the complex interaction between other injury factors, which is an important consideration in identifying causal factors 55. The identification of the relationship between index and subsequent injuries provided in this review forms a foundation for tertiary prevention programmes to be developed when an understanding of the injury aetiology and mechanisms have been further established 11 12…”

“…However, sports injury research needs to move from simple analyses of risk factors and concentrate on how these factors interact among other determinants for injury 14. Injury occurrence results from a combination of possessing different risk factors and participating with these risk factors 15.…”

“…In football, the incidence has even increased by 4% per year over the last decade at the Champions League level 2. Recently, the complexity involved with the occurrence of injury has been highlighted,3 but clinically meaningful risk factor identification remains an important part of the injury prevention model 4. The most recent meta-analysis identified age, previous hamstring injury and quadriceps strength as risk factors for a primary or recurrent hamstring injury 5.…”
