Complexities of the Future Water Resources Projects and Challenges for their Planning and Design

Abstract

India after Independence. With the near-optimum utilisatioll of easy terrain tlzere is 110 other option but to exploit the difficult sites, overcomillg the adverse geological and other conditions tlzat exist in the Himalayas as well as i11 tlze northeastern region. But the clzalle11ges ahead are not 011/y in tlze complexities of the projects ill respect of their design and construction but also in the planning process. Inter-state and environmental aspects, construction materials and co11structio1Z metlzodology, sizes of projects and components are some of the issue which need to be addressed comprehensively while pla1111i11g multi-pwpose projects. This article discusses these complexities in some technical details and puts forward .suggestions for meeting the challenges.
