Summary Generation expansion planning (GEP) is a power plant mix problem that identifies what, where, when, and how new generating facilities should be installed and when old units be retired over a specific planning horizon. GEP ensures that the quantity of electricity generated matches the electricity demand throughout the planning horizon. This kind of planning is of importance because most production and service delivery is dependent on availability of electricity. Over the years, the traditional GEP approaches have evolved to produce more realistic models and new solution algorithms. For example, with the agitation for green environment, the inclusion of renewable energy plants and energy storage in the traditional GEP model is gradually gaining attention. In this regards, a handful of research has been conducted to identify the optimal expansion plans based on various energy‐related perspectives. The appraisal and classification of studies under these topics are necessary to provide insights for further works in GEP studies. This article therefore presents a comprehensive up‐to‐date review of GEP studies. Result from the survey shows that the integration of demand side management, energy storage systems (ESSs), and short‐term operational characteristics of power plants in GEP models can significantly improve flexibility of power system networks and cause a change in energy production and the optimal capacity mix. Furthermore, this article was able to identify that to effectively integrate ESS into the generation expansion plan, a high temporal resolution dimension is essential. It also provides a policy discussion with regard to the implementation of GEP. This survey provides a broad background to explore new research areas in order to improve the presently available GEP models.

Summary The paper presents a multi‐year, multi‐objective framework for integrating Renewable Energy Sources (RESs) into the high voltage transmission network of Iran's National Power Grid (INPG). The objective functions in this study are the total cost, including the investment cost and operating cost for the planning horizon, and the system reliability. The first objective function is stated from the economic point of view, while the second objective function is considered as a security index in the expansion planning issue. The main purpose of this paper is to increase the RES penetration into the generation mix of INPG. Since the mentioned 230 to 400‐kV INPG is a large‐scale power system, the problem formulation is investigated in a mixed‐integer programming, and then, the developed multi‐objective problem has been solved using the augmented epsilon‐constraint optimization method. In order to select the executive plan for installation, the fuzzy satisfying decision‐making procedure is adopted in this study.

En la última década, un gran número de trabajos de investigación han abordado el problema de la expansión de los sistemas de potencia, coordinando en un solo problema de optimización el planeamiento de expansión de la generación (GEP, Generation Expansion Planning) y el planeamiento de expansión de la transmisión (TEP, Transmission Expansion Planning). El GEP normalmente se lleva a cabo sin tener en cuenta las restricciones de red y desde una perspectiva energética. Por otro lado, el TEP busca encontrar los refuerzos en la red, que atiendan una demanda futura de forma económica y confiable. La integración de estos problemas ha sido abordada utilizando diferentes métodos, modelos y funciones objetivo. En este artículo se presenta una revisión bibliográfica del problema del planeamiento integrado GEP-TEP desde diferentes puntos de vista como su modelado, métodos de solución, consideraciones de confiabilidad, entre otros. En la literatura especializada se encuentran artículos de revisión que caracterizan de forma independiente los problemas GEP y TEP. Sin embargo, no se encuentran revisiones que aborden problema GEP-TEP integrado. Surge entonces la necesidad de caracterizar los aspectos del planeamiento de la expansión integrada de los sistemas de potencia, con el propósito de proporcionar herramientas de consulta para los investigadores en este campo.
