Composition and in vitro Anticancer Activities of the Leaf Essential Oil of Neolitsea variabillima from Taiwan

Abstract: This study investigated the chemical composition and in vitro anticancer activities of the essential oil isolated from the leaf of Neolitsea variabillima. The essential oil was isolated using hydrodistillation in a Clevenger-type apparatus, and characterized by GC-FID and GC-MS. Sixty-seven compounds were identified, representing 100% of the oil. The main components identified were trans-β-ocimene (13.4%), α-cadinol (10.5%), terpinen-4-ol (9.3%), τ-cadinol (9.2%), β-caryophyllene (8.8%), and sabinene (6.7%). T… Show more

“…Both CPO and CP are sesquiterpenes isolated mainly from the essential oils of such medicinal plants as Ocimum basilicum, Tagetes minuta [26], Toona sinensis [27], Hyptis spicigera and Lippia multiflora [28]. Caryophyllene had anti-proliferative ability on many cancer cell lines, including oral, liver, lung, colon, melanoma, leukemia and erythroleukemia [29,30,31]. Notably, CPO inhibited growth and induced apoptosis through suppression of the PI3K/AKT/mTOR/S6K1 pathways and ROS-mediated MAPKs activation in human prostate and breast cancer cells [32,33].…”

“…NEA and NCA oils were active against lung carcinoma with IC 50 of 43.5 and 46.2 mg/mL, and breast carcinoma with IC 50 of 44 and 47.9 mg/mL, respectively. This may be attributed to the presence of phytol, a-ionone and b-ionone which have been reported with cytotoxic activities (Dasgupta & Humphrey 1998;Sua et al 2013). NCA and NEA oils were inactive against human colon cell line (HCT-116).…”

“…56 Alpha-cadinol (an alcohol) found in variety of plants, including C officinalis, can induce cytotoxicity in cancer cells of different origins. 57 In summary, the genesis of tumors is not mere hyperproliferation but a process perturbed by a plethora of individual events that include inflammation, altered cell survival, and progression of cell cycle. Medicinal herbs TF, EA, and CA can prevent or intercept these standpoints.…”
