Better management of coastal marine resources generally requires good knowledge of habitats and resources. This need led to the performance of an identification and bioecological characterization study of critical sites for small pelagics in the Senegalese coastal marine zone. Biological and ecological data were collected using beach seines (12 to 28 mm mesh) and surface drifting gillnets (28 to 36 mm mesh) at sites identified by fishermen on the basis of surveys. The results of the study highlight the bioecological characteristics of these sites: (i) the Port-Baie Hann site - a nursery and spawning site with a high diversity for the target species; it is under marine pollution threat; (ii) the Mbodiène-Ngazobil site, with high diversity for target species and the Kafountine-Cap site are nursery and spawning sites under high fishing pressure, (iii) the Diakhanor-Sangomar site - a spawning site under the potential threat of exploration of offshore Sangomar oil in addition to the high fishing pressure. This work is a first flagship contribution to a process that should lead to the development and control of new tools for the effective and sustainable management of small pelagics at national and regional scales.

Zooplankton, including the ichthyoplankton, abundance and species richness over time in the subtidal waters of Umm Al-Namil Island, Kuwait Bay, were sampled and quantified from September 2016 to August 2017. At the same period, physicochemical measurements (i.e., water temperature, pH, salinity, dissolved oxygen and nutrient concentrations) occurred. A total of 9 larval fish families were identified: Acropomatidae, Bregmacerotidae, Bythitidae, Clupeidae, Engraulidae, Leioganthidae, Platycephalidae, Pseudochromidae and Sparidae, in addition to fish eggs. Other zooplankton were mainly represented by Copepoda, followed by Radiolaria and Molluska larvae. Generally, some sampling events (i.e., months) had 100% fish larvae, while others had 0% fish larvae. The physicochemical parameters showed variations at each sampling event as well as within the same season. Total zooplankton (including ichthyoplankton) mean abundance was highest in summer (22.65 ± 2.85 ind.5l 1), while winter (18.13 ± 1.64 ind.5l 1) and autumn (17 ± 2 ind.5l 1) mean abundance values did not significantly vary. The lowest mean abundance was observed in spring (14.33 ± 1.67 ind.5l 1). Mean species richness was highest during spring (7.22 ± 1.66), but not significantly different from autumn (7 ± 2). No significant difference was observed between winter (6.73 ± 1.64) and summer (5.90 ± 2.85). Overall, the results indicate that zooplankton species richness and abundance in Umm Al-Namil Island varied temporally in response to fluctuations in environmental conditions. Primary among these fluctuations is water temperature at different seasons of the year.

The spatial and temporal variation in the distribution, abundance and assemblage structure of zooplankton were examined in a mining-impacted stretch of river Ganga. The collection of samples has been done from three different sampling zones such as Z1 (Chandi Bridge Ghat) as reference zone, Z2 (Shyampur), and Z3 (Bisanpur) as mining-intruded area from May 2017 to April 2018. During the analysis, twenty-eight species of zooplankton kindred to four groups mainly Rotifera (ten species), Protozoa (five species), Cladocera (eight species), and Copepoda (five species) were identified. In the course of analysis, it was observed that Rotifera were dominant (43.49 %) followed by Cladocera (19.58 %), Protozoa (18.31 %), and Copepoda (18.62 %). The results showed that the distribution and abundance of zooplankton fluctuated more at Z1 (reference zone) as compared with Z2 and Z3 (mining-intruded zones). The diversity indices also indicated the higher richness, abundance, and evenness of zooplankton ranging from 3.145 to 3.180 at Z1, 3.081 to 3.129 at Z2, and 3.130 to 3.175 at Z3. The canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) showed positive and negative correlation between the zooplankton and water quality of the river Ganga. The present study shows that the anthropogenic activities such as river bed mining disturbed the water quality through enhancing the turbidity and nutrients load in the aquatic system. However, these changes in water quality significantly affected the distribution and abundance of zooplankton.
