Composition of the essential oils of Sideritis cladestina ssp Cyllenea and Sideritis sipylea

Abstract: The quantitative composition of the essential oils from two different Sideritis (Labiatae) species (S cladestina spp cyllenea and S sipylea) is reported. Over 80 components have been identified in each species by means of GC and GCMS analysis, and a number of substances have been identified for the first time in these essential oils.

“…These species contain many bioactive components such as β-pinene, α-pinene, siderol, sideridiol, sabinene, linearol, foliol, epicandicandiol, siderol and ent-7α,18-dihydroxy-15β and 16 β-epoxykaurane (Gergis, Argyriadou, & Poulos, 1989;Venturella, Bellino, & Marino, 1995;Gomez-Serranillos et al, 1998;Aligiannis et al, 2001;Aboutabl et al, 2002;Kilic, Yildiz, Goren, Tumen, & Topcu, 2003;Tunalier et al, 2004;Gabrieli, Kefalas, & Kokkalou, 2005). According to main components in essential oil, Sideritis species were classified as containing monoterpene hydrocarbons, oxygenated monoterpenes, sesquiterpene hydrocarbons, diterpenes and others (Kirimer, Tabanca, Ozek, Tumen, & Baser, 2000).…”

“…The oil of Sideritis dichotoma from Turkey contains predominantly α-pinene and βpinene 21 whereas in the oil of S. germanicopolitana myrcene, sabinene and β-pinene were found to be the main volatile substances 20 . The essential oil isolated from S. cladestina and S. sipylea presents also comparatively high amounts of α-pinene, β-pinene, myrcene and limonene 12 . Baser et al 15 described α-and β-pinene as well as carvacrol as main essential oil components of Sideritis scardica Griseb.…”
