In this study, in order to expand the engineering application range of thermoplastic corrugated sheets, flame-retardant thermoplastic corrugated sheets were prepared by the thermoplastic molding method. Based on our previous research results, we prepared flame-retardant prepreg tapes with the flame retardant addition accounting for 15%, 20%, and 25% of the resin matrix. Then, we prepared flame-retardant thermoplastic corrugated sandwich panels with corresponding flame retardant addition amounts. The limiting oxygen index test, vertical combustion test, cone calorimetry test, and mechanical property test were carried out on each group of samples and control group samples. The results showed that when the flame retardant was added at 25%, the flame retardant level could reach the V0 level. Compared with the control group, the flexural strength and flexural modulus decreased by 2.6%, 14.1%, and 19.9% and 7.3%, 16.1%, and 21.9%, respectively. When the amount of flame retardant was 15%, 20%, and 25%, respectively, the total heat release decreased by 16.3%, 23.5%, and 34.1%, and the maximum heat release rate decreased by 12.5%, 32.4%, and 37.4%, respectively.

This article reports a novel lightweight integrated multifunctional composite (LIMC) with good thermal ablative and insulating properties for high temperature extreme environment. LIMC, which is an integrated woven carbon fiber preform reinforced phenolic aerogel composites, was prepared using vacuum impregnation and ambient pressure drying. The as-prepared LIMC consisted of a dense surface layer exposed to environment, and a lightweight insulation zone to manage the heat load. The influences of weaving parameter and resin structure of LIMC on thermal protection and insulting performance were investigated. The results demonstrated that LIMC exhibited excellent ablation and insulation properties, and the weaving parameter and resin structure can affect integrated thermal protection and insulating performance. The 3D orthogonal recession layer with dense aerogels can improve the ablation resistance, while the 2.5D layer-layer angle-interlock with light aerogels can increase the insulation behavior of LIMC. The novel LIMC presents wide application prospects in the field of thermal protection and heat insulation.

The Thermal Protection System, or TPS, is the layer that shields spacecraft from the extreme aerodynamic heating that occurs during re-entry and launch. We proposed an optimized design of an Integrated Thermal Protection System (ITPS) in this paper. An ITPS provides thermal protection as well as structural load-bearing capability. Thermo-chemical simulations are carried out with the help of the Fully Implicit Ablation and Thermal response program (FIAT) for better understanding of the thermo-chemical behavior of the system under the extreme conditions of a space vehicle. Similarly, a structural analysis is performed to determine the structural integrity of the proposed ITPS design. Both the thermo-chemical and structural analyses show that the proposed corrugated-core sandwich structure is viable in terms of recession, pyrolysis, and structural integrity.
