Computational analysis of experiments on shock detachment in hypersonic flow of nitrogen and carbon dioxide over a wedge

Abstract: One of the most dramatic effects of vibrational and chemical non-equilibrium in hypersonic flows occurs in the bow-shock detachment process in flow over a wedge. This was shown theoretically and in reflected shock tunnel experiments by Hornung & Smith (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 93, 1979, pp. 225–239). In the present work, the effect is first demonstrated by computation of two-dimensional non-equilibrium flows. The effect of the finite transverse extent of the wedge is then studied by three-dimensional computati… Show more

“…In these numerical studies, the thermal non-equilibrium effect was described by the multi-temperature energy equations (Zheng et al 2021). The two-temperature (2-T) model proposed by Park (1985a) was the most widely used thermal non-equilibrium model (Guo et al 2019;Hornung, Gollan & Jacobs 2022;Passiatore et al 2022). Recently, the 3-T, 4-T and 5-T models were applied in the numerical simulation to describe the relaxation processes among different energy modes in detail (Farbar, Boyd & Martin 2013;Surzhikov 2016;Wu et al 2022).…”
