Computational Study on Design Space Expansion During Teamwork

Abstract: When observing a design space expansion during teamwork, several studies found that cumulative solution-related issues' occurrence follows a linear trend. Such findings contradict the hypothesis of solution-related issues being characteristic for the later design stages. This work relies on agent-based simulations to explore the emerging patterns in design solution space expansion during teamwork. The results demonstrate trends that accord with the empirical findings, suggesting that a cognitive effort in solu… Show more

“…The transformation of the abstract concept of the design space into a quantifiable and measurable construct marks a paradigm shift in design research (Kan & Gero, 2016;Perisic et al, 2021). This study seeks to lay the foundation for the understanding of the construction, characterization, measurement and temporal dynamics of the design space and its connection to the cognitive behaviour of experienced designers.…”

“…Within this space, ideas are conceived, iterated upon, and transformed into tangible design outcomes. Recent years have witnessed a shift from the metaphorical interpretation of the design space, towards reifying it into a more tangible and measurable construct (Gero & Kumar 1993;Gero & Milovanovic, 2022a;Kan & Gero, 2017;Perisic et al, 2021). This transformation aligns with the broader trend in design research, which seeks to study the underlying cognitive processes driving design thinking (Goldschmidt, 1997).…”

“…It could be explained by the increasing stability of the force graph as key concepts become more and more grounded. Even though, across time, the design space expands as designers introduce new concepts (Perisic et al, 2021), concepts start to be more and more connected which reduces the propensity for movement. It also suggests that concepts become more and more grounded as the design advances.…”

“…In doing so, a two-fold goal is achieved: we test the system, verifying its soundness, and obtain a basis for future systematic studies on diversity by establishing sufficient conditions for the emergence of the phenomena of interest. The system is described in detail in (Perišić, 2020) and has previously been employed in studies of various team behaviours and processes (Perišić et al, 2019a(Perišić et al, , 2019b(Perišić et al, , 2021(Perišić et al, , 2023.…”
