Computer Animated Relaxation Therapy in Children Between 7 and 13 Years with Tension-Type Headache: A Pilot Study

Abstract: This pilot study evaluated the effect of computer animated relaxation therapy in children between 7 and 13 years with tension-type headache and the children's experiences with the therapy. The therapy consisted of an uncontrolled nine-session course in modified progressive relaxation therapy assisted by computer animated surface EMG provided from the trapezius muscles and with the physiotherapist as a participant observer. Outcome measures were (a) headache frequency and intensity, (b) pericranial tenderness, … Show more

“…Three single group outcome studies investigated various forms of BFB. The first study ( 17 ) included a sample of children with frequent or chronic tension-type headache who underwent 9 sessions of electromyographic biofeedback combined with computer animated relaxation therapy. Between baseline and 3-month follow-up, headache frequency decreased significantly, dropping from 19.1 to 11.1 headache days per month (49.1%).…”

“…However, these authors did not systematically assess any improvement such as dietary habits or reductions in school and home stressors. PMR supported by computer animated surface EMG (SEMG) biofeedback was useful for young TTH sufferers (Tornøe and Skov, 2012). Both clinical and home health promotion programs showed equally promising results for TTH and migraine in children (Burke and Andrasik, 1989; Hermann et al, 1997).…”

“…AT could be particularly suitable for TTH as it helps to control the overall level of activation, strongly associated with the emergence of this disorder [117]. Even a study using progressive relaxation training with children with TTH showed an improvement in headache frequency [118].…”
