Concept, Developments, and Consequences of Greenwashing

Abstract: Purpose: This paper aims to identify the problems arising from the relationship between greenwashing and the ambitious climate targets set by both Member States and the European Community as a whole. It is indisputable that climate change and its consequences need a firm response from states. Design/Methodology/Approach: The authors use a literature review methodology consisting of a bibliographic analysis and an analysis of legal acts. “…Considering the proposal on the use of Flutix seals (Zych et al, 2021), we note that six variants of seals were proposed, which in various cases distinguish different criteria for products, their production and packaging, for example, the sign Flutix RECYCLED marks products containing recyclable materials made of plastic, glass, environmentally safe production. In the future, such a complex certification can be useful, important, and effective, but at the initial stage of countering greenwashing, the use and application of a ban on fake seals, arbitrary eco-markings, recognition of greenwashing as an offense, and the introduction of penalties for this act will be more significant and necessary.…”

“…This process would be associated with the complexity and inconsistency of the indicators used (Spaiser et al, 2017;Swain, 2018;Ala-Uddin, 2019;Del Río et al, 2021), which are shaped by the regulations, culture and individual values of the organisational context (Ferrer et al, 2020;L opez-Arceiz et al, 2020aL opez-Arceiz et al, , 2020b. According to Berrone et al (2017), Yang et al (2020), Diaz-Sarachaga (2021), García-Meca and Martínez-Ferrero (2021), Zych (2021) and Calabrese et al (2021), these limitations can lead to greenwashing processes, as companies may be tempted to adopt some sustainability management tools that would allow them to display an inaccurate level of corporate sustainability development (Martinez, 2021;Seele and Schultz, 2022). There are various drivers that can explain the emergence of greenwashing: external, organisational and internal (Delmas and Cuerel, 2011;Wu et al, 2017).…”

“…Two types of washing processes have been observed: greenwashing and SDG-washing (van Zanten and van Tulder, 2021a). Previous literature has focused on greenwashing, analysing how indicators can be used to appear socially and environmentally responsible when in reality poor performance levels are being achieved (Berrone et al , 2017; De Freitas et al , 2020; Yang et al , 2020; Lashitew, 2021; Zych, 2021). However, few studies have analysed in detail the process of SDG-washing, where companies implement positive actions towards certain SDGs without considering the possible negative consequences on others (Heras‐Saizarbitoria et al , 2022; Ferrón et al , 2022).…”

“…Besides, the ESG investment scale in Japan is also expanding rapidly, which accounts for 8.1% and has surpassed the scales in Canada and Oceania [14]. On the other side, the decline of European ESG investments (from 66% in 2012 to 34% in 2020) may relate to the introduction of European policies that prohibit "greenwashing" (from SFDR) [15]. This policy cracks down the greenwashing behaviors, requiring all financial market participants in the EU to disclose ESG situations, and raising ESG disclosure standards to make it easier to track and measure.…”
