Conceptual frameworks and the philosophical foundations of general living systems theory

Abstract: The continued expansion and fragmentation of biological disciplines impede education, communication, and efficient advance of biological research. Reversing these trends may require a unification of theories and concepts from all levels of biological organization. One form of this unification is the statement of generalizations that apply to all living systems. We explore the philosophical foundations of general theories of living systems by analyzing conceptual frameworks as they apply to biology. This analys… Show more

“…2,19,23,35 Moreover, theoretically guided research is needed to provide a comprehensive, systematic, and clinically relevant body of knowledge. An integration of systems theory, [36][37][38][39] social-ecological systems theory, 40,41 and stress theory 42,43 predicts that children's development is affected by individual, family, community, and systemslevel characteristics and that stress on any person in the family system has a major influence on the health of all family members. Substantial research indicates that disability can be a major life stressor for children and their families.…”

“…Theory suggests that caregiver burden, role-functioning, and stress may have deleterious effects on the health of caregivers [2230] and that stress can reverberate throughout the family [31]. Little research, however, has examined the role of these factors in the relationship between the medical characteristics of a child with cancer and their parents’ QOL.…”

“…While habitat improvement strategies need to be based upon ecologically sound principles where relations among habitat elements and fish populations have been demonstrated, they must also be carried out with an understanding of the potential capacity (sensu Warren et al 1979) of the system to support fish. The potential capacity of most midcontinental North American streams to support fish has substantially diminished since the arrival of European settlers.…”
