Conceptual metaphors in press headlines on globalisation

Abstract: The systematic use of metaphor and metonymy in economics discourse facilitates reading and widens the scope of our understanding in the globalisation domain. The importance of metaphor in conveying ideology has been highlighted since Lakoff and Johnson (1980:34) and recent studies have shown in detail how ideology, particularly in press discourse, underlies conceptual metaphors (Hawkins 2001; White and Herrera-Soler 2003). The aim of this article is to identify and contrast the conceptual metaphors underlying … Show more

“…Moreover, Brône and Coulson's (2010: 222ff) work provides experimental evidence for the psychological reality of the products of doublegrounding or interface as used in headlines. Additionally such phraseological variations, as we have pointed out elsewhere (Herrera Soler, 2006;Herrera & White, 2007;Herrera & White, 2010), create a complicity between speakers and hearers since both speaker or producer's ingenuity is matched by the hearer or reader in that the latter's capacity to recognise the ingenuity involved shows he or she is up to the challenge posed by the former. To spell out how the overall process operates, let us consider the following examples: 41) Hotels' silver lining could have a cloud (Irish Times 29/8/2010) The fixed expression every cloud has a silver lining, meaning a positive aspect can always be found in something which is negative overall, is here turned around to the meaning that something that is positive overall may entail a negative element.…”

“…It is impossible to give a comprehensive overview, so varied and prolific are research activities. Suffice it to mention: studies of metaphor in the media (Herrera, 2006); in business (Koller, 2003); the role of metaphor in economics (Henderson, 1982;White, 2003); metaphor in science (Holton, 1984) metaphor in teaching ESP (Charteris-Black, 2000; Law, 2010); metaphors as carriers of ideology (Dirven et al, 2001) and as mirrors of culture (Kövecses, 2005); metaphor in discourse construction (Samuels et al, 1993;Кланщакова, 2003) and metaphors in theory-building (Mouton, 2012). Metaphors have been studied synchronically and in the diachronic perspective; within a single culture and across cultures; as a purely linguistic phenomenon and as mental images in metaphorical thinking.…”
