Conducting Importance–Performance Analysis for Human–Elephant Conflict Management Surrounding a National Park in Vietnam

Abstract: In this paper, we present a conceptual framework of human–elephant conflict (HEC) management embodying community aspects gleaned from the importance–performance analysis (IPA) for a National Park in Vietnam. Nine approaches were proposed to prevent and mitigate HEC (HEC indicators), of which six fell into different quadrants based on the respective estimations of farmer and non-farmer respondents. Both the levels of importance and performance (I-P) of the HEC indicators are evaluated between (I-P) among farmer… Show more

“…IPA is a useful methodology for evaluating satisfaction and is widely used in empirical research in many fields, such as ecosystem services [73][74][75], sustainable forest management [76], human-wildlife conflict management [77,78], adaptive waste management [79,80], and earthquake disaster management [59]. It is an ideal tool for measuring the quality of products/services because of its easy-to-use and easy-to-understand presentation of data graphics [81].…”

“…This indicates that reallocating resources to this quadrant performs well, but its significance is limited cating the potential for wasting limited resources wh allocated elsewhere [45]. Each quadrant of the stand strategy to identify areas of concern and actions to be IPA were initially developed for marketing purposes but are now used in a variety of fields-for example, tourism [45,47], health [46], public administration [48], education [49], waste management [50], disaster management [51], forest management [52], and national park management [53]. This study will also look for the level of importance and performance based on local people's perspectives on post-mining conditions.…”

“…The second part includes ten indicators that measure the I-P levels of adaptive capacity for PWM in five dimensions including assets, flexibility, social organizations, learning, and agency (Table 1). A five-point Likert scale is used to evaluate the I-P levels of the adaptive capacity indicators, with scores ranging from 1 (the least important/extremely dissatisfied) to 5 (the most important/strongly agree for performance) (V. V. Nguyen et al, 2021). The final section gathers information about respondents' socioeconomic characteristics, including gender, marital status, age, education, income, occupation, and place of residence.…”

“…The data analysis involved three main steps. Initially, a pairwise t-test was executed to conduct a gap analysis with the purpose of identifying the degree of alignment between performance and importance perceptions (Chen et al, 2021; V. V. Nguyen et al, 2021). This is measured as performance minus the importance of indicators.…”
