Conductive carbonaceous membranes: recent progress and future opportunities

Abstract: Electrically conductive membranes have shown tremendous promise in the treatment of water, due to their ability to overcome certain limitations that traditional membranes face. Membranes that can simultaneously serve as...

“…Ultimately, the most notable contribution from the proposed framework is in its ability to determine, hierarchically, the chemical and structural properties as well as processing parameters needed to achieve high-performance CFs, and how to compensate either at the precursor level or during synthesis to achieve manufacturing consistency. Furthermore, because the nanoscale models represent forms of carbon that are not unique to CFs, this framework can be modified and applied to other systems like films, coatings, and porous membranes ( 39 , 44 , 45 ), along with other carbonaceous materials like glassy carbons ( 43 ), and the insight of this work may provide additional insight on possible fabrication strategies to improve on their performance.…”

“…Future research should focus on clarifying the external and internal fouling on IEM and investigating effective fouling mitigation techniques in the ED. Patil et al [165] reviewed recent work using carbonaceous conductive membranes for fouling mitigation, contaminant degradation, permeability and selectivity enhancement, highlighting the benefits of carbonaceous conductive membranes in each and highlighting areas that we believe are promising future research directions. Future research should focus on disentangling fouling-reduction processes, overcoming mass transfer constraints and testing more relevant model systems for contaminant degradation, and identifying largescale application areas that might benefit from permselective capability.…”

“…Carbon-based electrocatalytic membranes have been widely used for the degradation of micropollutants due to the ease of synthesis, high specific surface area, high conductivity, and excellent mechanical strength ( Cui et al., 2021 ; Patil et al., 2021 ). The micropollutant removal performance of the carbon-based electrocatalytic membranes is summarized in Table 1 .…”

“…Membrane materials are of great importance to the efficiency and cost of electrocatalytic-membrane-based processes. Of commonly used membrane materials, CNT and Ti-based membrane materials are still not affordable for practical applications ( Patil et al., 2021 ). Also, the leaching of loaded catalysts such as Pb and Sb into the solution during the filtration process is also a challenging issue ( Gao et al., 2014 ; Liu et al., 2018 ).…”
