Conductors sag monitoring by means of a laser based scanning measuring system: Experimental results

Abstract: In this paper we will present the experimental results relevant to clearance to ground measurements carried out on high voltage transmission lines by means of an innovative measuring system. The instrument is based on a laser scanning method and carries out measurements from ground at a distance of about 30 meters from the line.

“…Finally, using this angle and the distance from the monitor to the line, one can calculate the sag. In [17]- [19], the laser sag meter using an infrared source at 1550 nm was applied to calculate the sag and the clearance. Similar systems have been developed by the same authors for conductive defects [20], ice accumulation [21], winter icing and summer overheating [22,23].…”

“…Methods based on vibration sensors alone [13] without using the topology, weather or conductor information, can eliminate the room for errors from these sources. Optical methods can achieve good resolution in sag measurement along with high SNR, when interference filters are used [43]. The sensitivity of the sag measurement method can be enhanced through the use of CFBG [15].…”

“…The accuracy of the laser based system is better than 5 cm. Another laser scanning based method to measure ground clearance for a transmission line was proposed in [43]. In this method, the scanning device is placed approximately 20 m away from the transmission line.…”

“…Examples of point to point matching approaches are the following: iterative closest point (ICP) [5]. Iterative matching range point (IMRP) and the popular iterative dual correspondence (IDC) [6,7] are also in this category. These point to point methods can find the correct pose of the current scan in one step provided the correct associations are chosen.…”
