Cone‐beam computed tomography and the dentist

Abstract: Although cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) is just 15 years old, it has revolutionized the practice of dentistry, so much so, there is hardly a dental specialty which has not been affected by this technology. Nevertheless, it presents the dentist with a number of important challenges. An initial steep learning curve must be addressed without unnecessary exposure to the patient. This is particularly important when the patient is a child.

“…69 Any lesion larger than this would most likely require in-hospital management and should be referred to such a facility for imaging and treatment. Unlike CBCT, MDCT images the patient supine rather that upright and therefore allows the use of intravenous contrast medium (IVCM).…”

“…However, the radiation dose of a computed tomography scan is much higher than the conventional radiography techniques . Other limitations, such as scattering from metallic dental restorations, extended acquisition time, and the inability to reproduce thin sections, have also been reported . Implant planning is usually performed either digitally or directly on printed films with the help of implant templates.…”

“…The CBCT technique introduces an era in the modes of images and reconstruction of data for viewing. Compared with standard computed tomography systems, CBCT produces images with good spatial resolution and isotropic voxels, and the scanning time is significantly faster with a much lower radiation dose . CBCT has been used in various areas, such as oral diagnosis, oral surgery, and implantology .…”
