Cone synapses in macaque fovea: I. Two types of non-S cones are distinguished by numbers of contacts with OFF midget bipolar cells

Abstract: L and M cones, divided into two groups by absorption spectra, have not been distinguished by structure. Here, we report what may be such a difference. We reconstructed the synaptic terminals of 16 non-S cones and the dendritic arbors of their ON and OFF midget bipolar cells from high-magnification electron micrographs of serial thin sections of a small region of macaque fovea. Each cone terminal contacted a similar number (~16) of invaginating central elements provided by its ON midget bipolar cell. By contras… Show more

“…Like the S-OFF midget bipolar cells, each L/M-OFF midget bipolar cell provided the sole input to an OFF midget RGC. Ribbon synapse counts have been reported to divide L/M-OFF midget bipolar cells into two populations, referred to as "sparsely" and "densely" branching, which presumably correspond to L-and M-cones 7,8 (but see Schein et al 62 ). The L/M-OFF midget bipolar cells in our study made an average of 39 or 51 ribbon synapses, with the sparsely branching group comparable to the S-OFF midget bipolar cells ( Figure 3G).…”

“…These cone/OFF midget bipolar cell circuits appeared to be in two groups of eight, one group including #25 with large numbers of basal contacts and of Outer Densities, the other group including #17 with small numbers (Schein et al, 2011). Here, we report that the numbers of Inner Densities fall into the same two groups (Fig.…”
