Confinement effect on the photophysics of ESIPT fluorophores

Abstract: The photophysics of three benzothiazole derivatives that exhibit excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) were investigated in a confined medium afforded by the water soluble supramolecular host octaacid (OA).

“…Thus, we can say that these characteristics exist because there is more stabilization of the excited state in a polar environment (DMSO and MeOH), adding to a possible push-pull effect of the diethylamino group (donor group) [14,28,29]. Moreover, these results should indicate a negative possibility of ESIPT occurring (in protic MeOH solvent), being only a direct influence of the substituents on the excited state (Figure 4) [30,31]. 1) compared to the 9,10-diphenylanthracene (DPA) standard molecule.…”

“…The AIE + ESIPT hybrid molecular probe 3 was synthesised via a Schiff-base condensation reaction of 4-(diphenylamino)benzaldehyde (possessing three phenyl rotors and a nonplanar structure which make it an ideal building block for AIEgens) and 2-(4-amino-2-hydroxyphenyl)benzothiazole (a characteristic ESIPT active luminogen) (see Scheme 1). 15,16 4-(Diphenylamino) benz-aldehyde (0.412 mmole, 0.112 g) and 2-(4-amino-2hydroxyphenyl)-benzothiazole (0.412 mmole, 0.1 g) were added to a ask, and then 10 mL ethanol and 1 to 2 drops of glacial acetic acid were added. The reaction mixture was then reuxed at 80 C for 18 h. Aer cooling to room temperature and ltering, a yellow powder was obtained that was recrystallized from ethanol and provided the pure compound.…”

“…Further, these host‐guest bindings are used to modulate the photophysical and photochemical properties of the various organic dyes . To date, variety of host systems such as cyclodextrins (CDs), calixarenes, octa‐acids, cucurbit[n]urils (CBns) are used to encapsulate the guest molecules . CBns are water soluble macrocylic hosts and have different number (n) of glycoluril units connected by a pair of methylene linkers ,.…”
