Confirmatory Factor Analysis of the Enriched Life Scale Among US Military Veterans

Abstract: The Enriched Life Scale (ELS) is a 40-item measure developed by the military veteran service organization, Team Red, White & Blue (RWB), to systematically capture and quantify the lived experiences of military veterans transitioning to civilian life. As Team RWB’s mission is to “enrich veterans’ lives,” veterans who conceived of and co-developed the ELS as a psychometric instrument defined what an “enriched life” would entail. Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) of the ELS revealed a five-factor structure captur… Show more

“…According to Fornell and Larcker (1981), convergent validity can be established via CR alone because AVE is a more conservative measure and relatively strict compared to CR. Likewise, other authors (Angel et al, 2019;Ibrahim et al, 2019;Shaakumeni and Csapoì, 2019) also insisted that latent variables' AVE can fall below 0.50 if its CR is satisfactory.…”

“…We conducted confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) with the United States Department of Agriculture’s RUCCs included as a 16th SVI variable. Convergent validity was determined by statistically significant (i.e., p < .05) construct factor loadings (Angel et al, 2019; Cole, 1987). Internal consistency reliability was determined by average interitem correlations >0.2 (Piedmont, 2014).…”

“…OLS EFA was conducted iteratively until all items within a particular construct exhibited loadings of ≥0.40 (Knekta et al, 2019). Scale refinement is often driven by the observation of factor loadings when working with military veteran populations (Angel et al, 2019). Cronbach's (1951) alpha was used to measure internal consistency reliability on the final set of construct items.…”

“…The previously listed domains are programmatic priorities for The Mission Continues (TMC), a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization in the United States serving military veterans and their families. These domains are specific and unique to TMC, and they collectively represent a reintegration construct that is unlike other validated measures in use by other veteran-serving non-profits (i.e., the Enriched Life Scale used by Team Red, White, and Blue; Angel et al, 2019). TMC, which was founded in 2007, has enlisted 93,600 veterans in 8,650 service projects, primarily in underserved areas throughout the United States, having operations in 40 cities.…”
