Entry into terrorist organizations has often been described from an extrinsic perspective, as a biographical rupture. However, the “careers” of activists from illegal Basque far-left and national liberation organizations show continuities, underscored by the players themselves. We used a model developed by Snow and McAdam [2000] to understand the "identity work" that accompanies integration and participation in clandestine groups. Two major forms of identity work characterize entry into the organizations studied: “identity convergence” and “identity amplification”. These results suggest a need to reconsider the heuristic relevance of the concepts of radicalization and tip over into terrorism. They also help clarify the role of both cognitive and affective group identification within the identity redefinition process for the individuals involved.

Les travaux scientifiques sur l'engagement féminin au sein d'organisations basques dites terroristes sont rares. Grâce à une enquête empirique qualitative, nous avons pu préciser les fonctions assumées par les femmes au sein d'ETA et Iparretarrak ainsi que leur rapport à la violence. L'échantillon permet d'analyser les différentes modalités d'entrée dans les organisations clandestines selon les générations. Les données empiriques contribuent à récuser les stéréotypes de genre souvent convoqués pour expliquer la participation des femmes à des entreprises illégales. Ainsi à partir des années 1980, les modalités d'incorporation des femmes et leur rôle au sein d'ETA en particulier ne se distinguent pas de celles des hommes. En ce sens, le genre ne semble pas incarner une catégorie pertinente pour expliquer les trajectoires individuelles d'engagement des femmes dans certaines organisations clandestines illégales comme ETA, IK ou le PIRA.

Founded in December 1958, Euskadi Ta Askatasuna (ETA) was dissolved on 11 May 2018. During its almost sixty years of existence, ETA underwent phases of military offensive and then a decline in its operational activity. In order to understand the limits of these episodes and their reasons, we have created an original database listing all the actions of the armed group. Our analysis contributes to highlighting the strategic developments of the clandestine organisation and stimulating discussion of the conclusions previously drawn from the group's databases of fatal victims. We will thus consider the consequences of methodological choices on the interpretation of the history of a clandestine organisation.
