Conformity or differentiation? A U-shaped relationship between peers’ CSR and focal firms’ CSR

Abstract: Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate the influence of peers’ corporate social responsibility (CSR) on focal firms’ CSR from an integrated perspective. The current study aims to explore whether as peers’ CSR increases focal firms’ CSR would first decrease and then increase. Design/methodology/approach This study is based on a sample consisting of Chinese listed manufacturing firms from 2010 to 2016. “…Our results show that the stock market reacts negatively (positively) to CSR award announcements in the short term (long term). Our findings are consistent with the research showing a nonlinear relationship between CSR and firm financial performance (Barnett and Salomon, 2006; Wang et al , 2008; Long and Zhang, 2021). Developing countries tend to have inefficient institutional environments, immature market mechanisms and heavier stakeholder skepticism.…”

“…The firm–government relationship has also been a focus of research on CSR practices in emerging markets (Bao et al , 2016; Ghoul, 2017; Lin et al , 2015; Long and Zhang, 2021; Marquis and Qian, 2014; Zueva and Fairbrass, 2021). Previous studies demonstrate that national level institutional contexts have a significant impact on firm-level CSR (Campbell, 2007; Ioannou and Serafeim, 2012).…”

“…First, by focusing on peer listed stars, we extend the recent discussion on the peer effects of CSR. Prior studies on the impact of peer firms' social responsibility practices have verified that peer firms' CSR behavior has a positive effect on focal firms' CSR in general (Gao and Hafsi, 2015;Liu and Wu, 2016;Marquis and Tilcsik, 2016;Yang et al, 2018;Tang et al, 2019;Long and Zhang, 2021;Li and Wang, 2022). Most of these quantitative studies have been conducted based on the average level of peer firms.…”

“…It is shown that CSR is largely determined by a focal firm’s operating environment (Ioannou and Serafeim, 2012; Liang and Renneboog, 2017). Thus, pioneering scholars have indicated the impact of industry or community peers on focal firms’ CSR (Gao and Hafsi, 2015; Liu and Wu, 2016; Marquis and Tilcsik, 2016; Yang et al , 2018; Cao et al , 2019; Tang et al , 2019; Long and Zhang, 2021; Li and Wang, 2022). Most scholars have investigated how firms react to their peers’ CSR adoption.…”
