Congenital cytomegalovirus infection diagnostics and management

Abstract: Purpose of the reviewCongenital cytomegalovirus infection (cCMV) is the most frequent congenital infection and a leading nongenetic cause of sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) and brain disease. The purpose of this review is to highlight recent developments in the diagnosis and management of children with cCMV. Recent FindingsProgress is being made in the efforts to identify more infants with cCMV, especially those with asymptomatic infection. Largely due to efforts by various advocacy/parent groups, a number o… Show more

“…More than half of the congenitally infected infants identified by the newly implemented universal screening (30 of 54; 55.6%) would have been ‘missed’ by our previous targeted screening approach. This finding is in agreement with the general recognition that in the absence of universal screening, most cCMV cases remain undiagnosed 7 , 9 , 11 . Of the 30 well-appearing infants who were identified and consequently further evaluated because of universal screening, one had intracranial involvement, leading to early administration of antiviral treatment.…”

“…The development of an efficient testing strategy to enhance universal screening of cCMV is recognized as a high priority goal 9 , 11 . In this study, we report on the implementation of eight-sample pooling of saliva samples for universal screening of cCMV.…”

“…Research conducted by Rendiana (2015) shows that there is a positive relationship for the relationship between efficiency and Return on Asset in banking. Operational efficiency affects financial performance as measured using the ROA ratio (Pinninti et. al., 2022).…”

“…After initial infection, typically acquired through close contact with body fluids such as saliva or urine, the virus establishes a latent state within specific cells of the host's immune system, including monocytes and macrophages [3]. While the immune response can control active viral replication, the virus remains latent, ready for reactivation under conditions of immunosuppression or other triggers [4].…”

“…In developed countries, CMV infection during pregnancy is relatively common [1], with a range of potential fetal outcomes. These outcomes vary widely, from asymptomatic infection to the development of severe fetal abnormalities affecting multiple organ systems [1,4]. Notably, congenital CMV infection is recognized as the most common viral cause of congenital disability worldwide, with profound implications for long-term health outcomes [4].…”
