Congenital intraluminal tracheal cyst causing an obstructed left lung in a newborn

Abstract: Intraluminal tracheal or bronchial cysts are rare. We present a congenital cyst of the distal trachea which caused obstruction of the left main-stem bronchus. The chest radiograph obtained at birth showed an expanded, irregularly opaque left lung. Within several hours, the opacity cleared and the lung became markedly hyperexpanded. The cyst ruptured spontaneously with resolution of the symptoms.

“…Intramural cysts of the trachea causing recurrent cyanotic spells were described in three case reports. 4,5,6 The biopsy of the lesion in two cases showed normal respiratory epithelium, scanty capillary vessels, primitive cartilage, and no mucous glands. 4,6 In the third case, the airway obstruction manifested at birth, but no histologic description was provided.…”

“…Bronchogenic cysts are embryologically derived from an aberration or separation of cells of the foregut [2,3]. Among these congenital foregut cysts, one of true tracheal root is extremely rare: mainly single cases have been reported in the literature [4].…”
