Congenital Left Ventricular Diverticulum Diagnosed by Echocardiography

Abstract: Congenital left ventricular diverticulum is a rare cardiac malformation. The incidence of left ventricular diverticulum is reported to be 0.05% of all congenital heart malformations. This case series comprised three infants with the diagnosis of congenital left ventricular diverticulum determined by echocardiography. In addition, two of the three babies also were detected to have other cardiac disease. Echocardiography is a useful tool for diagnosing congenital left ventricular diverticulum.

“…3 Use of cross-sectional echocardiography and color Doppler imaging has been reported for the diagnosis of congenital LVD in fetuses, neonates, and infants. 5,6 However, in our case, the LVD was identified on neither prenor postnatal echocardiography. LVD complete visualization was impossible due to the peculiar shape of the left ventricular apex, and the LVD became visible only at 2 months of age.…”

“…When patients are symptomatic, ventricular arrhythmias are the most common presenting symptom (42,43). Pediatric patients with congenital left ventricular diverticulum may present with a pulsatile anterior abdominal mass (44). Diverticulum or aneurysm rupture and systemic emboli have also been reported as presenting symptoms or complications.…”
