Conodonts with preserved soft tissue from a new Ordovician Konservat-Lagerstätte

Abstract: Abstract. A newly-discovered Konservat-Lagerstätte in the Upper Ordovician of South Africa has yielded giant conodont apparatuses, some of which are associated with preserved soft tissues of the conodont animals. Lobate structures located to the anterior of the conodont apparatus in several specimens are interpreted as sclerotic cartilages surrounding the eyes, comparing closely with those of the Silurian agnathan Jamoytius. One specimen also displays a possible trunk trace.

“…Despite preservation of soft tissues (Briggs et al 1983;Aldridge & Theron 1993), sometimes in exquisite detail , there is still no record of such an internal skeleton, mineralized or otherwise. It is likely that the animal possessed a cartilaginous endoskeleton much like that of the extant agnathans, hag¢sh and lampreys.…”

“…All orthocone specimens recovered from the Soom Shale Lagerstätte come from a locality on Keurbos farm, about 11·5 km south-east of Clanwilliam, Cape Province, South Africa (Aldridge et al 1994). Of the 14 specimens described in this study, 11 came from loose blocks from the exposure face.…”

“…Microfossils include spores, acritarchs and chitinozoans (Cramer et al 1974;Gray et al 1986;Gabbott et al 1998). Macrofossils are represented by: shelly fossils including orthocones and lingulate brachiopods; arthropods, including trilobites (Cocks and Fortey 1986;Fortey and Theron 1995), eurypterids (Braddy et al 1995) and ostracodes; and conodonts (Theron et al 1990; Aldridge and Theron 1993;Gabbott et al 1995). In addition, two partial scolecodont apparatuses and a number of enigmatic organisms lacking skeletons have been recovered.…”

“…This suggests that once the carcasses were deposited on the seafloor they lay undisturbed by physical or biological disturbance. Many of these bedding plane assemblages also preserve the eyes of the animal as either dark, carbonaceous rings or circles, or as silvery films of clay minerals (Aldridge & Theron 1993;Gabbott 1998).…”
