“…30 In addition, all the investigators participating in our study are members of the Senological Studies Group from the Spanish Society of Senology, and therefore follow its guideline. 4 In those cases where radiologically or echocardiographically guided incisions were not possible, intra or periareolar procedures were allowed. In any case, neither the injection technique nor the time it was done, interfered in the results, as it has been the case in other published work.…”

“…3 Currently, the SLN biopsy is a standard technique used in breast cancer patients with clinically and radiologically negative axilla for the purposes of staging and prognosis. 4 The SLNB was introduced in the 90s, and significantly reduces the morbidity associated with axillary lymphadenectomy. 5,6 The gold standard for the detection of the SLN is a combined technique, in which both a radioisotope and blue dye are injected in the breast, and after some time to allow migration through the lymphatic chain, a gamma probe is used to detect SLNs.…”

“…In the last consensus document of the Spanish Society of Senology and Breast Disease in 2013, special consideration was given to the use of RGSLND following neoadjuvant treatment, thereby allowing ALND to be avoided in cases in which dissection would be negative for malignancy (with a level of evidence 1−). 18 Nonetheless, this approach remains open to discussion due to recently published series showing a high rate of false-negative results probably due to tumor regression produced by chemotherapy and by the effect of the systemic treatment itself which could modify normal lymphatic drainage of the breast and alter the lymph drainage map, translating into worse results with the technique and a higher rate of false negative results and a lower rate of SLN detection. 14,19 Other groups have published series with better results with detection rates of around 85% and false-negative results of 8.3%.…”
