Consensus and Contention in the Food-Versus-Fuel Debate

Abstract: This review discusses research on linkages between biofuels, agriculture, and food security. The literature indicates that biofuel expansion affects land use, puts pressure on food and feed markets, and modestly reduces greenhouse gas emissions. Researchers readily identify these outcomes, as well as the multitude of factors besides biofuels that have driven up food prices in recent years. However, precision in quantifying the extent of the impacts and in attributing effects to various drivers is elusive, resu… Show more

“…We also expected consumers with a higher GCV to prefer chipped wood over other resources. We postulated that consumers with green attitudes are more sensitive to the food-versus-fuel-dilemma identified in previous studies [32][33][34]. However, our results show no evidence for hypothesis H2c "Higher GCV increase consumers' preferences for resources with a perceived low food versus fuel dilemma in the case of bio-based apparel", which we therefore reject.…”

“…The intensively debated food versus fuel dilemma has been examined in various studies [32][33][34]. Consumers with higher GCV possibly perceive the use of agricultural resources for bioplastic as conflicting more with food security, whereas products made from forest wood can be perceived as conflicting less with food resources.…”

“…Emerging controversies over the impacts of bio‐based production (e.g. on land use, food, and energy security) have made it clear that biorefineries cannot be assumed to be inherently sustainable or unsustainable. To promote the sustainability in the early development of these systems, various biorefinery design methodologies have been published (e.g.…”

“…6 However, biomass is a controversial source of energy. The debate about energy crops and their role in food security and emissions from land-use change (e.g., Rosegrant and Msangi 2014;Searchinger et al 2009) has strengthened the focus on biowaste, such as municipal green waste, for energy generation. In the search for efficient conversion technologies for such feedstocks (often characterized by high water contents, low heating values, and heterogeneous feedstock quality), hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) is discussed as a promising technology (e.g., Titirici et al 2007;Funke and Ziegler 2010;Libra et al 2011).…”
