The study of machine consciousness has a wide range of potential and problems as it sits at the intersection of ethics, technology, and philosophy. This work explores the deep issues related to the effort to comprehend and maybe induce awareness in machines. Technically, developments in artificial intelligence, neurology, and cognitive science are required to bring about machine awareness. True awareness is still a difficult to achieve objective, despite significant progress being made in creating AI systems that are capable of learning and solving problems. The implications of machine awareness are profound in terms of ethics. Determining a machine's moral standing and rights would be crucial if it were to become sentient. It is necessary to give careful attention to the ethical issues raised by the development of sentient beings, the abuse of sentient machines, and the moral ramifications of turning off sentient technologies. Philosophically, the presence of machine consciousness may cast doubt on our conceptions of identity, consciousness, and the essence of life. It could cause us to reevaluate how we view mankind and our role in the cosmos. It is imperative that machine awareness grow responsibly in light of these challenges. The purpose of this study is to provide light on the present status of research, draw attention to possible hazards and ethical issues, and offer recommendations for safely navigating this emerging subject. We want to steer the evolution of machine consciousness in a way that is both morally just and technologically inventive by promoting an educated and transparent discourse.

Mental Effort and Counterfactuals Modulate Language Understanding: ERP Evidence in Older Adults

The relationship between language and physical effort in older adults is a field that is scarcely explored in the literature associated with embodiment. An electrophysiological experiment was conducted to explore the modulation of two linguistic contexts: factual and counterfactual, in relation to physical and mental effort using electrophysiological components. 27 older adults (M = 70.34 years, SD = 4.82, 15 women and 12 men) read sentences on a computer screen and responded to an activation test. The results indicate that the linguistic, factual, and counterfactual contexts, as well as the embodiment parameter of mental effort modulate the understanding of language and participate with variable preponderance in different time windows. Furthermore, counterfactuality seems to facilitate the processing of high mental effort, and both factual and counterfactual language elicit the N400 component. These findings contribute to the growing body of research on embodied cognition by providing novel insights into the nuances of cognitive demands involved in language processing in aging population, paving the way for developing targeted interventions aimed at improving communication and cognitive well-being in older adults.

Children across the world acquire their first language(s) naturally, regardless of typology or modality (e.g. sign or spoken). Various attempts have been made to explain the puzzle of language acquisition using several approaches, trying to understand to what extent it can be explained by what children bring to language-learning situations as well as what they learn from the input and the interactive context. However, most of these approaches consider only speech development, thus ignoring the inherently multimodal nature of human language. As a multimodal view of language is becoming more widely adopted for the study of adult language, a multimodal approach to language acquisition is inevitable. Not only do children have the capacity to learn spoken and sign language equally easily, but spoken language acquisition consists of learning to coordinate linguistic expressions in both modalities, that is, in both speech and gesture. To provide a step forward in this direction, this article aims to synthesize findings from research studies that take a multimodal perspective on language acquisition in different sign and spoken languages, including the development of speech and accompanying gestures. Our review shows that while some aspects of language acquisition seem to be modality-independent, others might differ according to the affordances of each modality when used separately as well as together (either in sign, speech, and/or gesture). We argue that these findings need to be integrated into our understanding of language acquisition. We also identify which areas need future research for both spoken and sign language acquisition, taking into account not only multimodal but also cross-linguistic variation.
