Considerations for Effective Lidar Deployment by Transportation Agencies

Abstract: Lidar is becoming increasingly popular across the United States, and state transportation agencies are adopting this technology for practical uses in transportation-related applications. This trend can be seen in the growing number of agencies acquiring lidar scanners and contracting lidar services. The primary factors behind this trend are that (a) surveyors, engineers, and technicians are becoming more educated about and increasingly open to lidar and its applications and (b) lidar is potentially more cost-e… Show more

“…In 2013, National Cooperative Highway Research Program Report 748 was published, which included guidelines for using mobile LiDAR in transportation applications ( 18 ). Chang et al also published guidance on how agencies could practically use and deploy LiDAR in 2014 ( 19 ). Chang et al discuss common transportation applications and acquisition options of LiDAR.…”

“…Therefore, investigating how to improve the accuracy of traffic data under adverse weather is significantly important for current CV technology. Light detection and ranging (LiDAR), an emerging sensor for intelligent transportation systems, has the potential of providing traffic data under good weather conditions [1]. The new 360-degree LiDAR can detect all road users and surrounding environments in a 360-degree horizontal field of view (FOV).…”

“…The result is a "point cloud" dataset of lidar point locations, from which elevation models can be created. Compared to the previously described conventional survey methods, lidar is generally considered to offer safer data collection, cost effectiveness, and a high level of detail [4].…”
